Project Background
As midsummer arrives, swimming pools have become the top choice for the public to escape the heat and exercise. However, the question of "whether the water quality meets the standards" has always been the biggest concern for swimmers. In recent years, regulatory authorities across the country have continuously intensified random inspections on the water quality of public swimming pools. Judging from the results of these inspections, the situation is not optimistic. Key indicators such as urea, residual chlorine, pH value, and total bacterial count have become the main non-compliant items. Once these indicators fail to meet the standards, they can easily cause health problems for swimmers, such as eye irritation, skin allergies, and respiratory discomfort. For example, excessive urea may come from human sweat and urine excretion, which not only affects the sensory quality of the water but also creates conditions for bacterial growth; abnormal residual chlorine content cannot effectively kill pathogens, increasing the risk of infection; an imbalanced pH value can irritate the skin and mucous membranes.
According to Hygienic Indicators and Limit Requirements for Public Places (GB 37488-2019), the water quality standard limits for artificial swimming pools mainly consist of the following indicators: turbidity, pH value, free residual chlorine, combined residual chlorine, ozone, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), cyanuric acid, urea, total bacterial count, coliform bacteria, etc.
The Implementation Rules for the Regulations on the Administration of Public Place Hygiene issued by the National Health Commission at the end of 2024 once again clarified that all commercially operated swimming pools must publicly display the 8 routine indicators specified in the "swimming pool water quality testing standards" every day, with a maximum fine of 30,000 yuan for violations. In other words, understanding the "swimming pool water quality testing standards" is holding the "golden key" to swimming pool safety.
